2023 European Championship week is over

The 2023 European Championship week is over, and it’s time to make notes on how to do better for next year’s 50th event!

We had a very difficult weather forecast a week before the start of the regatta. We met in Valmeria, Latvia, with a day already lost to the week. We quickly understood that we had to move further south or to Sweden. Both locations had the only ice in Europe and had bad weather coming. We decided to travel to Moletay, Lithuania, on Monday and in a snowstorm, knowing that Tuesday morning would determine if it was “GAME OVER” or if we had a chance for a long week of sailing. Hotels, language, cell phone reception, Wifi were a problem, plus about 10cm of heavy wet snow by bedtime. Our biggest question was about the lake’s size because we had not seen it.Tuesday morning’s temperature was plus 3 or 4 and windy. The snow was gone, and quite a bit of water was on the ice. Our hope of sailing for a long week was there, but the ice was not safe, and we needed to wait for colder weather that was in the forecast.Wednesday, light winds and scouting the lake took some time—hats off to race officials for attempting to run C fleet qualifying races. More or less, we had the same sail numbers at the top. With three starts, the wind was first from the right; then it was even, and last time it was from the left. The distance between marks was one km which meant four-lap races. The C fleet had a long and hard day while the rest of the fleets had to wait on the ice.Thursday was the day to get the regatta in. There was a light wind start to the day, and the forecast called for building winds. The distance between marks was 1.6 km, so that meant three-lap races. Overall, the race course was proper and relatively even, with winners from both sides. With 30 sailors in A-fleet, there was tight sailing. Getting a good average meant you were at the top, as it usually is.Friday, we got some extra snow and warmer temperatures, and the wind died. We waited but decided to call it a day and had the prize giving on the ice so most of the group would be there.

It was not the best week, but we were lucky to complete the championship. Thank you all for your best efforts and thoughts!

A big thanks to all the people involved making it happen and hopefully, we will have better luck with ice and weather in the next few years!

Happy B-day to our secretary Pataki Attila Jr today!
Hoping for your thoughts to our board – board@idniyra.eu

EC 2023 update 3: Venue Parking + Check-in

EC 2023 update 3: Venue Parking + Check-in

Dear Fellow DN Iceboaters,

Today before sunset we have wet ice conditions on the lake… It was +3C and the ice was soft but I was almost able to skate, I have been on worse ice. There was no wind for the day, so the center of the weather system was on top of us. The Black Flag will be up for tomorrow morning as well.

Hoping for less snow tomorrow. As of now, we have alternative sites in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland … because of traveling difficulties, we are currently not considering Sweden.

Our icescouts are on the lookout, MANY THANKS to them!

We are working on providing you with extra parking and getting on the ice safely.

Parking lot A – Launch site: Silzemnieku beach

https://maps.app.goo.gl/bwsurEMyxcAJvwrk7?g_st=ic

This launch site is closer to the race track, but it has bad road conditions and the parking will be quite tight and a longer walk is needed. Please park your Trailers closer to ice and cars further away. Parking is only allowed on one side of the road! We must make sure that bigger cars (like ambulances) can get through and that the ice doesn’t get too damaged.

Parking lot B – Launch site: Burtnieki Pier

https://goo.gl/maps/Y6oVz9zyJvjQxeSr8

It’s about 4km from the race area, with better roads, and a big parking space.

You will also have to cross a crack to get to the racecourse. A safety gate will be marked during the week.

On both launch sites please leave a card with your contacts on the inside of your windshield.

The check-in will be between 15:00-20.00 at the Race Office at ‘Sports Hotel Naktsmajas’: https://goo.gl/maps/Dkf4WrgTVzwYLGjP7

See you there! Pray to your weather GODs!

EC 2023 update 2: Venue Decision

EC 2023 update 2: Venue Decision

Dear Fellow DN Iceboaters,

Talk about difficult decisions and weather forecasts for the week of this season’s European Championship!

As it stands today the 2023 DN European Championship will be sailed on Lake Burtnieks, Latvia.

Launch site: Silzemnieku beach

https://maps.app.goo.gl/bwsurEMyxcAJvwrk7?g_st=ic

Due to the incoming storm this weekend, we will meet in the Primary location HQ at Valmiera, Latvia Sunday afternoon, 19th February and plan to take it from there.

For the weekend we recommend NO sailing on the ice as I see a possibility of double ice. The PRC will hoist a green flag if conditions allow it. I see rain/snow fall, temperatures going from plus to minus, strong winds and no good conditions for sailing. Because of this I suggest not unpacking but being ready at the parking lot in case of needing to move early in the morning.

There will be an ice check Monday morning, we plan to have news by 8:30, and if all is good, we will have the opening ceremony at the launch site and the race will be ON.

Parking at the launch site is tight and a longer walk is needed. Please park your Trailers closer to ice and cars further away. Parking on only one side of the road. We must make sure that bigger cars (like ambulances) can get through and the ice doesn’t get too damaged. Sunday we have the whole day to organise trailer parking.

Check in for the regatta from 15:00 – 20:00 February 19th, Sunday. If you have difficulty getting there on time, please contact regatta hotline: +48 605 235 676

EC 2023 update 1: venue

EC 2023 update 1: venue

Dear Fellow DN Iceboaters,

There is one day to go before the final decision on the location of this season’s European Championship.

At the moment it seems that a snowstorm will be hitting all the ice that we know of in the North.

Final call will be made Friday at noon. The PLAN is to start in Latvia a day late with registration on Sunday.

First days of the week show little wind and freezing for the Lakes around Riga so be prepared to be ready to race but also to wait for sailing in the second half of the week.

We have some backup possibilities in Lithuania, Estonia, Finland and the Scandinavian peninsula.

Next info comes Friday with instructions, meaning sailing venue and accommodation possibilities for all.

Meanwhile I ask you to please send us ice reports on the channels described in the previous post:

Thank you for your patience.

EC 2023 SI + Icereports

Dear Fellow DN Iceboaters,

There is a little more than one week to go before the final decision on the location of this season’s European Championship.

Hopefully we will get lucky and can make it happen at the original designated venue in Latvia.

We hope that we will be able to make up our minds early, but as always we will try to keep all avenues open until the very last minute in case something happens, which is not unknown in our sport.

Solid ice conditions have been reported from Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Finland and Estonia.

We would be happy if there were more backup locations with the cold weather moving in and new ice forming.

We would kindly ask you to send us ice reports with pictures of possible ice sailing locations approx. 2×2 km in the next 10 days (with +15 cm of thickness) with accountable weather forecast for the week of the event, launching areas and accommodation possibilities for 100+ sailors nearby.

Icereports sent to board@idniyra.eu or posted to the Icereport facebook group will be considered as backup locations.

Thank you

European Board on TC Decision 2022.10.03

European Board on TC Decision 2022.10.03

Without currently commenting on the recent TC decision’s compliance with the framework of DN Class Rules and Procedures (EPIC, RMA, NIA Constitution & Racing Rules & DN Continental Governing Documents, etc.), the Board of IDNIYRA Europe strongly recommends the voluntary survey process described in the document published by the TC to all of our members bringing equipment to or attending the North American DN regattas.

The Board of IDNIYRA Europe also recommends the voluntary survey process described for the European regattas where due to the irregularities uncovered in the past season planks will be under scrutiny by the class measurers regardless of manufacturer.

The Board of IDNIYRA Europe highly recommends doing these voluntary checks at home well before the regatta to ensure the optimal repairability, ease of mind and the best performance on the ice.
