What is going on?

Dear Sailors,

I am sorry to bring up a sensitive issue, but since the European Championship came to my country I can not look over what has happened today. I feel responsible what is going on here.

The race committee with the quads was sitting in the harbor 9 O’ Clock this morning. They seemed to refuse going out although the sailors were preparing or sailing a lot of them already out.

The course was not checked in time.

There was no reserve place to take the course.

We have 15 km to the opposite shore and about 30 km to the East coast from today’s place where we stood. That is a huge area, what was not checked for any possible courses before the race. The ice thickness is 17-19 cm with hard black ice base and only a few cm snow ice on top in flakes. You all has been there today and saw it. There should have been several places to put down the race course. There were local sailors coming to our event from the opposite shore and went back without a problem. We know the ice quality is the same all over and is more than enough to safe sailing.

It seems to me that we have again the same situation that has already happened in Estonia in 2015. We have great conditions and we don’t make races for strange reasons. We have changed the race committee since and I thought it was over, but it seems it is not!

I don’t find any good explanation why we were not sailing today and what was the reason that the organizers did not find the ice for us today…

I came here to race, but not only for the results. I think most of us doing it for the love of this sport. I am disappointed, and I did not signed up for this.

What happened today, destroys the good feeling and stone by stone demolishes our class.

I don’t want that and I  am ready to take steps against this.

I would like that the governing authority investigate this case and resolve this problem.

Please feel free to leave a comment.

Best Regards,

Peter Hamrak

EC 2017 – Second update

Weather(forecast) changes, plans change

On Our way to North we received the information, that Poland is not an option further. We changed our course immediately (like good ice sailor at wind shift) and headed to Rostock to catch the first ferry to Gedster (Denmark) and then to Sweden.  First we checked lake Vänern at Mariestad in  West Sweden. The ice looked promising, but after we measured the thickness it turned out that it is too weak. 7 cm only.

We had some time left till the sunset, thus checked the nearest lake Ymsen. The ice was ok, thickness 17 cm, black ice, the surface is clear. The only problem was, that we could not find any public access to the lake.

Then we headed  to lake Hjälmaren. Here in Fiskeboda the Monotype XV sailors are having their Championship. They are more than satisfied with the place.

Tomorrow we will check the ice here, together with other lakes in the neighbourhood.

Taking the evening ferry we will go to Estonia as well. Friday checking the ice there – evening decision.

What we have in the pocket.

Sweden – lakes near Stockholm

Finland – Pyhäjärvy

Estonia – Orissare and Võrstjärv

Hungary – Balaton

That’s all folks (for the time being)

Cheers,

Attila

EC 2017 First Update

Dear Participants,

The weather in Europe is changing. A week ago I thought it will be an easy decision on the site of the event, but today I face real difficulties.

The primary sites in Czech Republic are out. There are thick snow ice and some snow cover on the surface of the original black ice and in case of warm weather (which we expect throughout Europe) it will melt into slush.

Neusiedler-See is not safe enough. The warm currents washed the lower surface of the ice and there are big areas with only 3-5 cm of ice thickness. Since the ice is washed from the water side, there is no visual signs of it from above. Very dangerous. One of our Hungarian icesailors ran on such surface on this weekend, where he crashed and it took him to get out from the cold water about twenty minutes.

Balaton is till promising. We have here 20+ cm hard and safe black ice with clear surface. The warm weather is coming here, too. Hungarian iceboaters will continuously monitor the conditions here and report me.

Today myself with my son will start our ice scouting tour heading West Poland, to check the ice there. The Polish Championship was held there last weekend and the Juniors are there recently.

Would you have any place near you, which is worth to visit, please let me know.

JWC 2017 Final

Dear young iceboaters, coaches, parents.

The weather makes a huge influence on our sport. The primary areas in Poland like Vistula Lagoon and Masurian lakes are covered by snow. It`s a great surprise for Polish icesailors that we have ice in western part of the country.

Last days two lakes were investigated: Wielmie near Szczecinek where Polish Championschip take place this weekend and Duże Żninskie Lake in Żnin.

The decision for JWC 2017 is city Żnin. Port of the regatta coordinates: 52,51,08,N 17,44,13E will be indicated by direction markers from the main road: Dworcowa street.

The hotels and hostels:

  1. Hotel Martina – Headquaters of the regatta – 10% discount of regular price
