Swedish Championship 2014 | Spare Weekend

Due to poor conditions during the primary weekend in February we couldn’t finish the required minimum of 3 races to have a valid regatta. It was decided to postpone the remaining races to the spare weekend March 22-23.

The regatta will be open for new participants to enter but the one race we managed to complete during on the 15th of February will be accounted for which will result in a DNS for the newcomers.
All competitors will have to re-register if they plan to attend!

VENUE

Due to the quickly arriving spring we are quite limited in our options. Lake Storsjön in Östersund is still standing strong, 20-30 cm thick good quality ice. Forecast predicts cold weather ahead but possibly some snow as well. We will just have to wait and see (as ususal). Expect more info early next week. Decision no later than Thursday March 20th, 20:00 (CET) but earlier if possible.

European Championships 2014, Haapsalu, Estonia, day 6 – Finnal

The Haapsalu and Estonia reserved best conditions for the end. We had great conditions allowing Ice Boats to sail with a speed up to 100km/h and us to make all the races needed to have 7 races in all fleets.

Karol Jablonski this year is beyond competition, he won also the EC’s!

The prize giving ceremony shall be held around 6 p.m.

The provisionals results can be found below:

European Championships 2014, Haapsalu, Estonia, day 5

Today we started sailing with…. waiting for wind. Luckly around half past 12 the wind finally came, allowing us to sail 3 races for Gold fleet and 2 races for B and C fleets.

The wind was shifty, the visibility was very good, ice without water but pretty soft.

Karol Jablonski is not questioned King of this conditions. He proved it winning all 3 races. Good Job!

Provisional results can be found here: Europeans Championships – Series Standing – 7 races scored

World Championships 2014, day 4, Haapsalu, Estonia

Today we had a really beautiful weather, bright sun, not really shifty wind of 3-4 m/s speed.

In those great conditions we were able to sail 4 races for fleets A and C, plus 3 races for fleet B, so in the end we have done all planed races for Gold fleet!

Now we are waiting for the protest to end. As soon as they are finished I will publish the results.

Right now we are holding the Check In for Europeans Championships and preparing the Prize Giving ceremeny, that will be held during the banquet.

Ice Scouting 2014 – next day

Today we checked two other sites in Estonia.

Parnu has good conditions, but the launching is a little bit challenging. Big frozen area with no obstacles. The ice thicness is 35+ cm. The surface is even.

Later on we arrived to Haapsalu, where we found excellent ice. All the bay is frozen, no major cracks. The ice thickness is 35+ cm, black ice. We had excellent training during the day. The surface remained hard and fast even late afternoon.

Check http://due-north2014.tumblr.com/ for the photos.

Today I received information from Jörg that the conditions in Poland getting better, thus if everything will be OK, then of course Poland will have priority, since they are the organizing country.

Stay tuned and wait for final decision tomorrow late afternoon.

Ice Scouting 2014

Dear Icesailors,

This Monday we started our ice scouting tour and as today we checked two alternative sites for the 2014 DN WC/EC.

Siemianowka – where we finished the EC last year – has 25 cm of black ice with some snow ice on the top. The ice is bumpy at the launching site (the nice beach at the south-western part of the lake), but more even in the middle of the lake. If the alternate melting and freezing process will continue during the next few days the surface will be more even. We checked the ice at 10 o’clock, thus it was still hard. There are two major cracks on the northern part of the lake, one is totally frozen, the other is open a little bit (1-2 cm).  There is a big free area – about 3×5 km for setting the race course. The temperature was below 0 during the night – our car was well frozen by morning. The day time temperature is 2-5 degrees.

You can find graphical information on our tour on the Google Maps at the link:

(By clicking the icons the weather forecast, the ice conditions as well as few photos will be available.)

Rekyvos ezeras – Our second stop was at Rekyvos Lake near Siauliai/Lithuania at late afternoon. The ice conditions are similar than in Siemianowka. Since we arrived after a relatively warm day the top of the ice was soft, having big resistance (slow ice). The Lake is fully frozen, there are no cracks on the ice. The ice surface was a little bit bumpy having a softer layer on the top (1-2 cm) and a hard core (25 cm). More info on the links above.

Now we are in Parnu. Today I will check the ice here, in Haapsalu and maybe around the Saaremaa Island.

As Jörg posted the decision will be on Thursday or even later, due to the changing weather conditions.

Stay tuned, CU on the Ice.
